The MTS design criteria was to build an all-tube guitar amp that Carvin has long known about the effects of miss-loading a guitar pickup which can. A few months ago, I purchased a used Carvin MTS from a friend . ive herd of this before unfortunately i blew my mts up last night. I hear ya – At this point, it depends on how much you want to put into the amp in time and trouble. I hear you man, I was never a fan of the JCM either – the and the ‘s were much better for different styles of music, of courseand no clipping diodes in those ones. The challenge on this would be sourcing the carvni and of course mounting and installing it within the available space of the chassis.
I really dug the tone he had in the video but I worry if the K in the diodes position is enough, what do you think? Ordered to 12ay7’s last night. I swapped lots of tubes out and stuff over the years. We’ve added some “new” guys to the moderator crew. What should be an awesome sample of audio orgasm really turns into a cheap dirt pedal in the chain. I’m not at a tech level where i caevin go removing diodes on something i might want to sell, so removing the clipping diodes is not an option for me – sounds like it’s ill advised anyway.
It has a pretty respectable clean channel that takes effects well when they are thrown right into the input.
Cavrin channel has its own independent tone stack consisting of Treble, Mid, and Bass. Between V and V, I’m guessing there’s some voltage drop on the jumper wires in between.
But everything they say above it true – the Clean Channel IS nice, but it completely overpowers the distorted channel, which to my ears was meant to mimic that Recto late 90’s nu-metal tone, but its wimpy and fizzy. Well, last night I finally got the proper resistors soldered in and this morning I’ll get the capacitor put in there. I am a crazy fool that has no problem poking around inside tube amplifiers. I’m crazy, but I will only play around with cold amps that have been properly discharged of voltage – I recommend you do the same.
I think it would be good, or atleast better, with an OD infront. Those resistors are technically “Fuselinks”, but I can’t see what they’re actually protecting, and they’ve made enough heat over the years that the board has discoloured and warped.
The Brad December 27, at The other option would be to bias your power tubes on the cold side and just prepare to not have epically long life on any of 32000 tubes across the catvin. I never had much use for the watt mode, so these days I’ve just flipped it to 50 watts and keep power tubes in the inner sockets and I’m ready to roll. Anyway, I basically kept the diodes in because I couldn’t be bothered to figure out how cafvin mod it properly, and I kinda dug the “metal tone” which works for me as a primarily metal player.
Kaji13Sep 10, I swapped out v1-v3 for sovteks which i prefer for metal type tones. If your circuit is worth protecting then just throw a fuse in rather than something like a melting resistor.
The clean channel is pretty darn nice, and even does the SRV edge of breakup thing too, which i wasn’t expecting. It was just a pretty forgettable OD. The drive channel is really loose and has a high prescence sound that you can dial out ever.
My guess is that it’s an anemic power amp into a “meh” output transformer. I absolutely love the clean channel on this thing, very nice with my Big Muff.
There is no master volume on the amp. Newer Post Older Post Home. I don’t know jack about circuitry, I was just trying to carvinn out that I think their features and sounds are very similar.
I had one for about a week and hated it. Share This Page Tweet. Because of this, they hold onto power for a long time. Cranked it sounds pretty good to me. Matthew Meyers March 10, at 6: I have certainly found things I like better over the years but the JCM was fine. Do not say, “But 32000 told me to do it! Makes me wonder if you’re getting rated voltage off the primaries and at other test points in the circuit If you run it that way for any length, you can also pull the output tubes, which will simply run the preamp.
The big problem however is that lead channel. Kind of sad since the lead channel has enough gain stages on it’s own. All the non-heater voltages look fine, but heaters are definitely undervolted. Finally, i found someone who recommended a 12AY7 for the phase inverter – I happened to have on lying around made in china brand its really made a nice difference and helped this thing sound more like a real tube amp.
But, this makes me wonder – considering your under-voltage condition on the heaters, if you have an issue with your power transformer. I’ve got a small crate of those anyway. The biggest piece of advice I can give is whenever playing with a tube amp, make sure you keep one hand in your pocket – otherwise, play around on ones you don’t care about until you find something that doesn’t let the magic smoke out!
3200 10, 4. I mean if you really, really dig the amp then by all means do what you gotta do. Former band mate used one.
