I was quite excited to start reading this book, actually. The family is happy, wealthy, stimulated. I was positive the name of the book was The Ventriloquist and that the antagonist btockden a dummy.
Its psychologically driven horror preceded and alludes to the later refined fiction of Poe and Hawthorne. When he vrown at this task, he believes he has also failed his deity. When she returns home, she finds Carwin hiding in her closet.

Obviously it’s not fair to compare someone writing in the ‘s to someone writing in the second half of the 20th century, but Brown seems interested in just stringing together as many weird tropes as he can in pages. Though at first doubtful of the voices that the men claim to hear, Clara also begins to hear a strange voice. It is not so over the top that you completely lose a sense of the eeriness, but the melodrama is such that you just have to laugh at certain points.
