Barnes Wallis is an inspiring figure to any engineer, but the relentless way that obstacles are overcome, so that smaller and smaller raids can tackle more and more difficult targets, is what really drew me in to his story. After the war, Brickhill sought to go back to newspapering, but quickly abandoned it to begin work on his first book, entitled Escape to Dangerabout his experiences in the POW camp.
Though The Great Escape is a novel, its brickkhill story is true, and the novel’s author Paul Brickhill was a participant in it. The first half, the story of the original mission, it’s conception and execution, is definitely worth the read. Remember that the Commander lived in a different time and you can’t always apply modern values on historical events. It’s amazing what those young men did!
