He spent the rest of his life giving away the fortune he had accumulated and crusading for international peace. He spent a carjegie chunk of his time traveling in Europe as well as selling bonds there.
His life was pretty darned interesting, and there were moments where I was like “oh okay, that’s interesting. In the end, despite his diminutive stature, he was a giant in American history. But the ebullient Carnegie — one associate called him the happiest man he had ever met — had literary aspirations and quoted Shakespeare liberally.
It appeared that elected leaders gave him access to promote his ideas, yet took advantage of his generosity and laughed carneggie him behind his back.
It kind of ran out of steam for me after he retired from the steel business to focus on his philanthropy, especially the world peace bit. And with this he accomplished the final, and to his mind, the most important goal he had set himself.
I am consistently fascinated by this era in American history. Nasaw makes some sense out of the contradictions, but describes a man who seems too small to play the public hasaw.
