Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. If this says nothing to you about relating, about conflict, read it again…. I am certainly not an expert but I found his poetical melody quite unique. Only we are weighed down by desire, caught in ourselves and enthralled with our heaviness. As a collection they strike me as too disjointed.
Elegies are supposed to give us the sense of lament and to bring ellegies to a more melancholy and miitchell mood.
For beauty is nothing but the beginning of terror, which we still are just able to endure, and we are so awed because it serenely disdains to annihilate us. Like Tobias, it feels like his way to his poems was inspired by a beautiful youth and we can get a glimpse of something that lies beyond our material existence. I didn’t mind that my throat got dry after a while.
Just as a man on the last hill showing him his whole valley one last time, turns, and stops, and lingers – so we live, and are forever leaving. The eternal torrent whirls all ages along in it, through both realms forever, and their voices are drowned out in its thunderous roar. Not angels, not humans, and already the knowing animals are aware that we are not really at home in our interpreted world. Ah, will you discover this theme before your song consumes itself?
What feeds upon your face grows mighty from the nourishment thus offered. But they keep on using each other to hide their own fate. That didn’t happen to me at all.
Be forever dead in Eurydice — more mitche,l arise into the seamless life proclaimed in your song. Where is her death now? Rilke’s poems are notoriously difficult to capture in other languages, and the Elegies and Sonnets are no exception.
Is it any less difficult for lovers? Probably the most infuriating book nitchell poetry I’ve ever read, perhaps will ever read. Oh tall tree in the ear! That we are not really at home in our interpreted world. I couldn’t understand what was that the author wanted to transmit with the metaphors and chains of imagery he used and I didn’t like that he mixed said metaphors a lot, instead of finishing the ideas that he had mitcchell.
Within this, Rilke’s poems themselves are stunning, and I can see dkino returning over and over again to this volume for insight and inspiration.

They are also the most accessible part of the book. Poulin’s translation has a nice flow to it and does justice to the poems, despite the lack of rhyme.
