I like my weirdness in controlled doses, when it gets too much I find my enjoyment slipping and this whole book was an exercise in jumping the shark at fairly much every opportunity. One critic writes that Pavic “keeps one reading at first for the moment to moment amusement of his richly embroidered surface, and then with the perverse obsession to discover if there is any foundation whatsoever to the history of the Khazars.
I liked the idea of a book that presents three vastly different viewpoints of the same thing. I wanted to like it, I tried to like it, it failed to be likable.

The narration really was all over the place and my rexnik to tie the threads together p I really wanted to like this book because its esoteric subject sounded awesome, but honestly I knew that I was in trouble when I read the words “eschewing conventional narrative and plot” on the back cover.

Too much for me. And when I say bizarre, I mean, absolutely, off the wall, wtf are you talking about? However, most of the characters and events described in the novel are entirely fictional, as is the culture ascribed to the Khazars in the book, which bears little resemblance to any literary or archeological evidence.
