He was a quintessentially cosmopolitan Russian who was named by Time magazine as one of the most influential people of the century. Given as part of the Charles Eliot Norton lectures, these compact essays provide an insight into the mind of one of the greatest composers of the twentieth century.
He also published a number of books throughout his career, almost always with the aid of a collaborator, sometimes uncredited.
